South America has much to offer the foreign visitor. It’s a huge continent that contains many nations, each with its own cultural identity and in this short article, you get to read about five wonders that are found in South America.
Amazon Rainforest
This has to be number one on anyone’s list. Covering a huge 7 million km, this natural basin is home to many animal species that have yet to be catalogued. The forest encompasses 9 countries, with 60% being in Brazil. Book one of the Brazil escorted tours in 2023 and experience this amazing region with an English-speaking guide and luxury accommodation. There are at least 350 civilisations that once occupied the region and many indigenous sites have been discovered, if you are into history. You can book a cruise down the Amazon River that takes you to villages and pristine jungles and you can immerse yourself in their culture; your guide can translate as you communicate with the locals.
Lake Titicaca
The highest navigable lake on the planet, Lake Titicaca is said to have spiritual qualities; many of the South American tours include a visit to the wonderful natural body of water. This is where the Inca civilisation was born and there are underwater ruins that show how the lake has changed over many centuries. The clear, still water has a calming effect on all that visit and you will spend a day on the water in a luxury vessel. Make sure you have lots of digital memory to capture still images and videos of this amazing body of water.
Atacama Desert
No list of South American wonders would be complete without this unique desert. Located high in the Andes on the borders of Chile and Argentina, the desert spans an area of 105,000 sq km, which is officially the driest desert on the planet. Indeed, NASA has carried out experiments because the environment is as close to the Martian environment as we can get on Earth. You can book a guided tour of the Atacama Desert with an English-speaking guide. Search online to find an established South American tour operator and browse their many tours.
Angel Falls, Venezuela
This epic waterfall drops an incredible 970m, which happens to be the highest uninterrupted fall of water. Located in the Canaima National Park, two rivers merge just upstream to provide the flow. You can only access the falls by boat or by air, as there are no roads in the vicinity. This waterfall was concealed from the Western world until an American aviator by the name of Jimmie Angel flew over the falls, while he was exploring for ore beds. The falls were named after him when he found the falls in 1933. There are guided tours that include a visit to Angel Falls and they can be found with a Google search.
Torres del Pain National Park
Located in the Chilean Patagonia, this park was established in 1959, with more than 180,000 hectares that are home to many wildlife species that are exclusive to the region. Ideal for the nature lover, this park is the most visited in Chile, with more than 250,000 people visiting every year.
